Did you know that the use of silicone cookware and cookware utensils is only suitable for use at temperatures up to 428 degrees F, or 220 degrees C and no higher? How many of you are using these tools at higher temperatures with little awareness?
I have more and more people that love to cook, talk to me about wanting to use non-toxic cookware utensils. We all want to be able to cook and prepare meals fast and easy, and most of all, safely!
Just because a new material offers us speed and ease, doesn’t make it safe at all costs. This is why I am passionate about The Porridge Mom stirring utensils, better known as spurtles. They are produced from Canadian sustainable forest-sourced hardwood maple which is naturally non-toxic, anti-bacterial, and resistant to stains and high temperatures.
If you look for 100% maple cooking utensils you may have realized that they are rarely available. Wood varieties that are less expensive and uncommon to North America and Europe are very often being used. Careful, some are not as good in hot food as is hardwood and unfinished maple which is the only wood used by The Porridge Mom. Some wood varieties are soft and the utensil may show some degradation such as splitting, over time. The Porridge Mom uses no coatings, no finishing materials, just raw and beautiful, safe hardwood maple. We do, however, suggest that you protect your spurtles with food grade mineral oil to protect the wood but if you choose to not do this, it’s not detrimental to your spurtles.
The Porridge Mom, new and soon to be launched spatula is on the left and the one on the right I have had for about two years! You’ll notice it has worn and it has begun to split! The Porridge Mom hardwood maple utensils will last a lifetime, just as all my spurtles have.
These spurtles have been used for anywhere from two to six years! You’ll notice that the wood portion that has been used to stir hot food has darkened slightly but there is no splitting and minimal staining!
